Tree Stump Removal FAQ
What is a stump grinder?
A stump grinder is a designated specialist piece of machinery that specifically removes tree stumps. Built on a wheeled or tracked chassis they come in different engine sizes and power.
The engine drives a cutter wheel that houses tungsten cutting teeth that when engaged by the engine rotates the cutting wheel at such a speed that it chips out the stump until the tree stump is removed leaving mulch where the stump once stood.
How much does it cost?
Costs are based upon the size and number of stumps to be removed. When requesting a quote, we need to have some idea of the number of stumps and a rough idea of how wide they are and how tall the stump is. We will also ask about the available access. With the above information, we can give you an accurate, ‘no obligation’ estimate over the phone or visit the site to provide an estimate.
How do I measure a stump?
For stump removal, tree stumps are can be measured using a tape measure or straight ruler using the procedures below.
- Measure the widest diameter (width) at ground level.
- Measure height of stump from ground level to the highest point of the stump.
- Include visable surface roots in overall diameter if you want them removed.
What happens to the chippings that are left?
The stump grinder reduces the tree stump into small chippings that are mixed up with the soil where the stump used to be. This resulting mulch is left in the tree stump hole for our customer to utilise. The ground can then be replanted immediately, turfed, or the mix can be used as an excellent alternative to other forms of weed-inhibiting mulch.
What happens to the tree roots?
Tree stump grinding focuses on removing the main stump bole, but if necessary any prominent lateral roots can be ground down if required. This will produce more mulch and ground disturbance. It is worth discussing the pros and cons with your contractor when they are surveying the site. The old tree roots will remain underground, but without the stump, they will rot in time.
Do I need to be home?
Our reputation is such that customers are happy for us to carry out the work in their absence knowing that the work will be done efficiently with the minimum amount of ground disturbance and the area being left tidy.
Will the tree re-grow?
Once the tree stump has been removed it should not grow back. However, there are a few species of trees that can occasionally send up the occasional new shoot from a peice of the old tree root. In the few cases that this could happen, a technition can advise you on the right solution.
